Dreamtime at the 'G
Tonight is dreamtime at the 'G as the Essendon Bombers take on the Richmond Tigers.
It's a celebration of the contribution of indigenous Australians to the game of AFL football, and it's a new-look Essendon side that will take to the field tonight after a series of changes from coach Matthew Knights. Notable inclusions include Jobe Watson set to add some grunt in the midfield, as well as the pace of Ricky Dyson and the presence of Nathan Lovett-Murray in defense.
It has been an unimpressive start to the season for both of the teams set to line up against each other for tonight's traditional Dreamtime match. Richmond sits in 12th position on the ladder with 2 wins, 5 loss and a draw. Essendon is right below them in 13th place with 2 wins, 6 losses. But percentage-wise, the teams are a world apart, with Richmond towering above the Bombers 96% to 70%. What this tells us is that Richmond has been highly competitive in its losses and impressive in victory. On the other side of the equation, Essendon has been uninspiring in victory and downright insipid in defeat, as has been readily apparent in the Bombers' five consecutive losses in recent weeks.
Recent form says the Tigers will take it away quite comfortably and the history of the Dreamtime round says nothing to the contrary. The official Essendon Bombers match preview noted that "the ladder would look very ugly for the Bombers should another loss be posted". From a fan's point of view, the ladder already looks ugly enough.
Regardless of the outcome, let's hope tonight's match is one for the highlights reel; a competitive contest that exemplifies the Dreamtime spirit of AFL.
