St Kilda v Essendon Wrap-Up

April 22nd 2008 22:50
Friday 18th April, 2008, Telstra Dome
St Kilda 18.15 (123) df Essendon 14.3

--

Apart from a freakish final quarter goal from Adam McPhee, there was not a lot to like about the Bombers’ performance on Friday night against St Kilda at Telstra Dome.

In a game of football, the final score does not always do justice to a team’s performance. On Friday night, however, the scorecard didn’t lie, and the discrepancy in scoring shots in the 18.15 (123) to 14.3 (87) final score told the story. In St Kilda’s 36-point victory, St Kilda racked up 33 scoring shots to Essendon’s feeble 17, and it was only deadly accurate kicking in front of goal that kept the Bombers in touch until the Final quarter.

With once-prolific goal scorer and captain Matthew Lloyd under an injury cloud and kept goalless by his experienced opponent Max Hudghton, and more importantly, without dual-best and fairest winner Scott Lucas, the Bombers were lame and dysfunctional in attack. Add to that the loss of in-form Mark McVeigh’s fiery midfield presence, and it was a night to forget for Bombers fans.

St Kilda led from the start, kicking out to an ominous 51-point margin early in the third term with apparently little opposition to contend with. Then - out of nowhere - Adam McPhee led a spirited Essendon charge and the Bombers were back within 3 goals shortly before three-quarter time. But the challenge was short-lived, and St Kilda responded, taking momentum into the final quarter from Riewoldt’s steadying goal on the siren at three-quarter time.

The Saints kicked clear again in the final quarter, quelling the Essendon attack and emerging victorious by 36 points. The final score was 18.15 (123) to 14.3 (87), the deficit 4.12. Thank goodness they can kick straight. It could have been 12.4.
